Mitsubishi set to idle Illinois plant for seven weeks

Slumping sales have pushed Mitsubishi to schedule a production stoppage at their Normal, Illinois plant early next year for a period lasting more than 40 days. The facility, employing 1,568 workers, manufacturers both the Galant and Eclipse. When the assembly line lights go dark between February 16 and April 3, it will signify the longest halt of production since the facility began operation in 1988. The news obviously isn’t good, but it thankfully doesn’t carry any immediate word about layoffs. According to Mitsubishi, all employees will remain on payroll during the shutdown and be shifted to other non-production jobs, including maintenance and training.

Parents Sue School in Nude Cheerleader Photo Scandal

What is it about the combination of high school cheerleaders and digital cameras that always leads to something stupid?

Despite several high profile cases of girls getting booted from cheerleading squads and expelled from school over revealing photos, teenagers keep snapping pics with their cell phones and digi-cams and landing themselves in hot water.

A pair of teens at Bothell High School in Seattle are just the latest to fall victim to their own poor judgment. What makes this case unique is that after the girls’ photos made the rounds with the football team and the girls were punished by being suspended from the cheer leading squad, their parents came to their defense. Sort of.

The girls’ mothers filed suit against the school. Their challenge asserts not that the school’s administrators were wrong to suspend the girls, but that they did not appropriately punish all those involved and that their right to due process was violated.

As part of the suit, the parents are looking for an apology from officials for not reporting the images immediately as child pornography or properly disciplining the other students involved. The parents also contend that the school officials unnecessarily shared the images with other staff members. It also charges that students, particularly those on the football team, found to be possession of the photos and sharing them with others should be punished appropriately according to child pornography laws.

The school only went as far as asking student who received the photos to delete them, which we’re sure was plenty effective.

Our take? The girls are dumb for taking the photos, students were mean to share them, the school was wrong not to punish those who distributed them, and the parents are stupid for thinking that a lawsuit isn’t just a waste of taxpayer money.

Obama Carries a Zune?

Apparently when Obama talks about “change” he means absolutely everything. It’s the only way that we can explain the fact that this confirmed Mac user is lugging a Microsoft Zune to the gym. We know that President Bush has an iPod, so the only reason we can figure that the President-elect is using a music player he can’t even sync with his computer (Zunes are not yet Mac-compatible) is out of a desire to be different from Bush in every way possible.

To be fair, we don’t know that it was his Zune, just that he was spotted with a Zune. But it’s just another item we can add to the list of gadgets that Obama apparently keeps on hand. Thankfully, unlike his BlackBerry, we can see no reason why the president would be forced to give up his audio player.

Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden are admitted iPod fans, which leads us to believe that Obama really is trying to create a bipartisan administration. Leave it to Obama to prove Microsoft and Mac products can peacefully co-exist.

There has already been speculation that an Obama presidency will spell the end of comedy — maybe he’ll also put an end to the flame wars between Mac and Windows fans. That would be real change.

The Governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich was arrested Tuesday for allegedly trying to sell President-Elect Barack Obama’s vacant Senate seat. Shocking, yes. But, this isn’t the first time the governor, who is serving his second term, has been in trouble.

During an FBI investigation into allegations of political corruption in Illinois, (an investigation that Blagojevich was fully aware of), a court-ordered wiretap recorded the following messages in regards to the Senate seat:

“It’s is a @#$%ing valuable thing. You just don’t give it away for nothing” and “I want to make money.”

Rumors spread that Obama was aware of Blagojevich’s alleged scheming but U.S. Attorney, Patrick Fitzgerald quickly squashed that rumor.

The governor is facing up to 30 years in jail and when he was confronted with the allegations at a press conference, his response was “I think there’s nothing but sunshine around.”

Blagojevich is said to have been planning a presidential run in 2016.
